2026-01-05 - Next ISG meeting and upcoming ISG workshop

Date sent 05.01.2026
Working group ISG
Subject Next ISG meeting and upcoming ISG workshop
Message

⚠️ This email contains two pieces of information: the next ISG meeting and the upcoming ISG workshop. Please read it carefully until the end.

Dear ISG members,

I hope you are doing well and wish you a very happy new year.

During our last meeting on 15 December, we discussed the importance of adopting a more regular schedule for ISG meetings and reducing their duration to one hour.

In this regard, I would like to suggest scheduling the next meeting within the last two weeks of January.

To do so, please respond to the poll by clicking on the link below so that we can select a date that works for the majority. You may select more than one option if you are available for several of the proposed time slots.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd5lL4nhUf0RDIBZpbIp8QOJsGzm05tnvHvTOSPM8XNrdhijg/viewform?usp=heade

[Please kindly respond to the poll by Monday, 12 January 2026, to help facilitate the organisation of the meeting.]

Regarding the next ISG Workshop, we discussed the possibility of holding it alongside the IFSA Congress (https://www.iamm.ciheam.org/fr/agendas/ifsa-2026-montpellier-call-for-papers-is-now-open/), which will take place from 29 June to 3 July 2026 in Montpellier. Two options are therefore being considered:

  • Option 1:  Schedule our workshop to take place alongside the IFSA Congress, between 29 June and 3 July
  • Option 2: Take advantage of the presence of some ISG members attending IFSA to organise the workshop a few days before the congress, on 26 or 27 June 2026.

[Please provide us with feedback on this topic before Friday, January 16, 2026.]

    Best regards.
    Maela Roudaut.

2026-01-27 - International Post Graduate Course: Farming Systems and Rural Livelihoods Analysis: Sustainable Farming in Multifunctional Landscapes, 22 March - 2 April 2026, Kasungu, Malawi

Message

Dear CopSys members,

Katrien and her colleagues from Wageningen are pleased to announce that registration for the course on rural households in Malawi is now open and you are welcome to participate!

In📍 Kasungu, Malawi | 🗓 22 March – 2 April 2026.

👉 Interested? Check out the link: https://www.pe-rc.nl/courses-retreats/farming-systems-and-rural-livelihoods-analysis

Please find below (and of course on the website) a short description of the course.

In collaboration with CGIAR Science Programs on Sustainable Farming and Multifunctional Landscapes, the PE&RC graduate school again organizes this field course (previously run in Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Uganda and Ghana) on Farming Systems and Rural Livelihoods Analysis (FSRLA) in central Malawi.

The focus of this edition of the FSRLA course is on farm household systems in multifunctional landscapes, as affected by poverty, pressures of climate change, population growth, land-use change, and changes in markets. Smallholder farming communities in tropical regions of Africa, Asia and Latin America operate in landscapes that offer diverse ecosystem functions and services but also pose stringent constraints on agriculture and food systems. Social and institutional factors (market arrangements, gendered divisions of labour and social practices) are equally important in shaping rural livelihoods.

This field course aims to practice data collection, data integration (with secondary data sources) and the analysis of diverse farm households, using different methodologies and techniques. Data collection through interviews, surveys, transects walks, field observation, will be practiced through field research in a smallholder farming context in the region around Kasungu, Malawi. We will address questions such as: How do diverse farming households currently cope with and adapt to challenges posed by internal resource constraints and external drivers? What alternative land-uses and resource allocations may reduce or overcome trade-offs between farm productivity, rural livelihoods and environmental impacts? Are such alternatives enhancing the resilience of farming households, and how are the burdens and benefits associated with these alternatives distributed within rural communities and households?

Target group: The course is ideally suited for PhD students and post-docs of Wageningen University, as well as (junior) staff of national agricultural research institutes and institutes of the CGIAR, working on and within (smallholder) production systems, rural livelihoods, and the effects of global change at the regional, national and local level.

With kind regards.

I believe that participating in this course will strengthen analytical skills, deepen understanding of sustainable farming systems, and generate practical tools that can be applied in research, training, and field-based interventions. I am confident that the knowledge and methodologies could also significantly contribute to improving professional practice and to supporting more resilient and sustainable rural livelihoods in Africa. I am particularly interested in this course because of its integrated approach to farming systems analysis, landscape multifunctionality, and rural development, which are highly relevant to the challenges faced by smallholder farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Thanks to Katrien and her team for this opportunity.

Message

 Dear CopSyS colleagues

We have the pleasure to invite you to the webinar given by Ray Ison at the SLU University

on March 17, 2026 (10.00 to 11.30 am (CET))

This webinar (see abstract below) is organized by the SYSTEM group of the ELLS University Alliance chaired by Katrien Descheemaeker  (https://www.euroleague-study.org/en/r-20337-alliance/r-20347-subject-areas/systems-analysis-and-design-of-agri-food-systems-in-a-changi.html)

Participation is free of charge but you need to register with the link below.
https://www.slu.se/en/calendar/2026/03/ray-ison/

Webinar abstract
Research is a practice that can be systematic, systemic or both. Systematic practice is essentially linear and associated with simple cause and effect.  In contrast systemic practice is relational and encompasses feedback dynamics; it is thus circular, recursive and adapted to context. These two concepts (systemic/systematic) can be understood as a self-negating, either/or, pair (a dualism) or as modes of praxis that can form a unity, a whole, by epistemologically responsible practitioners (i.e., a duality). Claims for research practice are that it can provide new understandings and (situated?) improvements, though all too often this is expressed as the production of ‘new knowledge’ in a simplistic manifestation of the linear model of knowledge production, rather than embodied enactment of knowing.  Drawing on his own agricultural education, his research and ‘teaching’ practice and his turn to Systems scholarship: social learning; systemic co-inquiry; systemic governance and the design of learning systems, Ray will explore the constraints to effective situational improvement that have come through the institutionalisation of the linear model of knowledge production, scholarship which began with the publication of:
Russell, D.B., Ison, R.L., Gamble, D.R. & Williams, R.K. (1989) A Critical Review of Rural Extension Theory and Practice. Australian Wool Corporation/ University of Western Sydney (Hawkesbury).  67pp.

He will finish with some personal reflections on a 55 year ‘career’ within (or near) the domain of agriculture (understood as one of the main domains in which human-biosphere relations are manifest through the enactment of ‘human activity systems’ that can be the product of systemic (co)design).

Biography: Ray Ison was appointed Professor of Systems at the Open University (OU) in 1994 retiring at the end of 2023 as Professor Emeritus. He is an Agricultural Science Graduate of the University of Sydney (1971-4) and received his PhD in tropical plant ecophysiology at the University of Queensland (1978-81). His first academic post was at the then Hawkesbury Agricultural College known internationally for its radical education model based on ‘systems agriculture’ (1982-6). His shift from framing grasslands as ‘biological/ecological systems’ to socially constructed human activity systems continued at the University of Sydney (1987-93) as conveyed in the book ‘Agronomy of Grassland Systems’ (Pearson & Ison 1987/1997).
Prof. Ison is the current President (since 2018) of the IFSR (International Federation for Systems Research); he has also served as President of ISSS (International Society for the Systems Sciences) and as a Trustee of the American Society of Cybernetics. In 2022 he was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Systems Society of India ‘for contributions to the transformation of society with a systems approach’. In October 2026 he will take up a Senior Fellowship within the University of Vienna Centre for Advanced Studies.

We hope you will be able to join us for this webinar and look forward to your participation. Please feel free to share this invitation with colleagues who may be interested.

Kind regards!

Message

Dear Copsys members,

We are pleased to introduce Schambach Owolabi, who is joining Copsys for his final internship. He will be helping me (Maela Roudaut) manage the platform this month before joining Katrien Descheemaeker at the University of Wageningen. Here are the words he wanted to share with you to announce his arrival:

" My name is Schambach Owolabi, and I'm currently concluding my Master's in Urban Agriculture and Green Cities at UniLaSalle Rouen. My focus is on sustainability—especially how urban systems like food production, environmental management, and community spaces can connect more effectively.

I'm particularly drawn to systems approaches because they help show how different pieces—like agriculture, waste, and city life—are all linked. I think that kind of holistic thinking is essential for building practical, lasting solutions in cities.

Outside of my studies, I've always enjoyed exploring different fields and expanding my perspective. I've worked in hospitality, as well as on food production farms and with research institutes in Nigeria. Those experiences have shaped how I think about food systems, both hands-on and analytically.

I'm really excited to connect with people in the community—I really value learning from different experiences and swapping ideas. Looking forward to contributing."

Have a good day!

✨ Project Spotlight: Advancing Systemic Solutions in Desert Agriculture

We are pleased to highlight the successful completion of the Integrated Desert Farming for Resilient Livelihoods (IDFRL) project involving our member @Abebe Bezaiet Dessalegn and led by ICARDA, showcasing the power of multi-actor, systemic approaches in desert farming systems.

Funded by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), the project was implemented by ICARDA in close partnership with Egypt’s Agricultural Research Center (ARC), Desert Research Center (DRC), and National Water Research Center (NWRC).

🌍 A strategic vision for resilient desert agriculture
The project demonstrated how integrated and science-based solutions can support the development of climate-resilient farming systems in Egypt’s drylands.
By adopting a social–ecological systems approach, it addressed interconnected challenges such as resource scarcity, isolation, limited market access, and climate vulnerability.

🤝 Co-designing solutions with farmers
A key strength of the project was its participatory and inclusive approach, engaging farmers through:

  • On-farm demonstrations
  • Field days across five governorates
  • Farmer-to-farmer knowledge-sharing videos
  • Training of trainers for researchers and technicians
  • Experience-sharing sessions to foster collective learning

📈 Impact beyond expectations
The project significantly exceeded its initial target, reaching far more than the expected 3,450 beneficiaries — a strong testament to the effectiveness of systemic, co-designed interventions.

💡 What we learn
This initiative is a powerful example of how systems thinking and multi-stakeholder collaboration can drive sustainable and scalable impact in challenging environments.

Message

We are delighted to introduce you to DEPE, in which two of our members are involved: Lise Paresys and Océane Espin. They have kindly agreed to give us a presentation:

Dear CopSyS Community,

We are Lise Paresys and Océane Espin, both agronomists engaged at the science-policy interface at INRAE’s Directorate for collective scientific assessment, foresight and advanced studies (DEPE).

The DEPE informs public policy, feeds the societal debate, and identifies research gaps on complex issues related to agriculture, food and the environment. It sets up ad hoc committees of experts and coordinates collective scientific assessments (CSAs), foresight and advanced studies, commissioned by public authorities or by INRAE itself.

Lise coordinates CSAs and advanced studies, and Océane is involved in foresight studies. CSAs are multidisciplinary and critical analyses that identify consensual, controversial, uncertain and missing knowledge in the academic literature. Advanced studies address more targeted issues than CSAs but involve additional data processing and analyses. Foresight studies explore possible futures. They draw on academic and stakeholders’ knowledge to formulate evolutionary hypotheses and scenarios over the next few decades.

The DEPE shall comply with the French National Charter for Expertise and follow principles of competence, plurality of disciplines and approaches, impartiality and transparency. We thus implement and develop methods to meet these requirements, questioning both the system within which we operate, and the system that we study in our projects.

We seek to explore and strengthen methods for interdisciplinary analysis and stakeholder engagement, and look forward to contributing to a collaborative learning community.

You can find out more about DEPE by visiting the following pages:

Message

Dear CopSys Members

I’m sharing this message from Myrto, who is looking for a postdoc position. She has just moved to the Netherlands and is therefore primarily interested in a postdoc there, but is open to other opportunities.

" After successfully defending my PhD thesis in February, I am looking for my next research challenge starting in late 2026 or early 2027.

My doctoral research in agronomy focused on pesticide reduction at the landscape level. I mobilized systems-oriented, comprehensive approaches (eg: analysis of collective action’s potential for pesticide reduction) and co-design methods (eg: scenario co-design).

I am interested in discussing Post-Doc opportunities related to farming systems design, landscape approaches in agricultural science and the upscaling of agroecological transitions.

If you think my profile could match your current or future projects, I would love to connect and share more about my work.

Feel free to reach out to me directly or to share this message with your colleagues! (email: myrto.parmantier@inrae.fr)
