I am Walter Ocimati (PhD), a researcher with the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT. My work focuses on banana and coffee farming systems in East and Central Africa, with emphasis on soil health, crop diversification, regenerative agriculture, and integrated pest and disease management. I combine field research with participatory approaches, working with farmers, extension services, public institutions and private-sector partners. I am particularly interested in understanding interactions and trade-offs within farming systems and translating evidence into practical solutions that improve productivity, livelihoods and environmental sustainability.

What I can bring to this network ?

I can contribute field-based experience and practical case studies from banana–coffee systems. I bring experience in participatory research, stakeholder engagement and evaluating agricultural innovations under smallholder conditions. have been working extensively on Integrated Farming Systems (IFS) including integarted aqauculture system, farming-system typology and systems-based approaches to sustainable agriculture. I followed an intersdiciplinary school curriculum because I think that fairness and sustainability issues cannot be tackled without a comprehensive understanding of all the factors involved, in order to design solutions effective in the long run.

My research combines crop modeling with participatory, on-farm approaches to understand how crops grow and develop within their environment. I analyze G×E×M interactions (Genotype × Environment × Management) to develop models and tools, while increasingly co-designing solutions directly with farmers through on-farm trials, Living Lab approaches, and participatory modelling, particularly in cereal-based systems. I started my career in ecology, continued through a PhD in crop modeling, and joined CIRAD in 2012, where I've worked on cropping systems diversification, first on sorghum-based systems in West Africa, and now on rice-based systems in Southeast Asia.

I'm an interdisciplinary food and farming systems scientist, currently at the Institute on the Environment, University of Minnesota, USA.

I use models to answer questions, but I'm not "a modeler". I'm most interested in using "good enough" models to help people make better decisions.

I have worked at a range of scales, from field-level crop models to global integrated assessment models. My current work is based around the Food System Supply-chain Sustainability (Foods cubed) platform, which estimates supply chain connections for commodity crops in the continental USA. We use county-level estimates of emissions, water use, and biodiversity impacts and connect those to the industries and companies who use those crops to produce beef, chicken, pork, dairy, and biofuels. This can show which stakeholders are connected to a landscape, opening up opportunities for collaboration along the value chain.

I have a PhD in Farming Systems Analysis from Wageningen University, where I worked with smallholder farmers in southern Mali to find innovative ways to use the resources on the landscape to improve livelihoods. During my MSc in Crop and Soil Science from Michigan State University, I did crop modeling for perennial grains in the USA and maize-pigeonpea systems in Malawi.

What I can bring to this network ?

I have a wide quantitative background including R, python, and OSgeo tools for geospatial analysis. I also have experience working with smallholder farmers in Mali and with regenerative agriculture practices in the USA. I speak Spanish and French as well as English.

I would love to discuss to what extent the landscape (or french concept 'territoire') can be considered as a system. And thus, to identify how to make it evolve towards agroecology, and what is missing for this transformation to be effective.

Sowing resilience, shaping tomorrow’s food security!

Presentation

I am an agronomist and crop modeler with a strong interest in agricultural systems research and resilience. My work integrates experimental trials with crop modeling to explore crop growth dynamics, water and nitrogen interactions and grain nutritional quality in cereal-based intercropping systems for smallholder farmers across diverse climate gradients. I also investigate the impacts of climate variability on crop performance and system resilience. Through systems science approaches, I leverage agronomy, modeling, and sustainability to build resilient and nutrition-sensitive food systems.

What I can bring to this network ?

I contribute through knowledge exchange by sharing insights from crop modeling and experimental trials, including experiences with cereal-legume intercropping under different nutrient stress conditions and diverse. I bring systems insights on how agronomy, modeling and sustainability can be integrated to address resilience and nutrition-sensitive food systems. I value collaboration and look forward to working with peers on systemic solutions that strengthen agricultural resilience aiming to support smallholder farmers and advance sustainable food security.
