Presentation
Katrien Descheemaeker is Professor Plant Production Systems in the Plant Science Group of Wageningen University (Netherlands). Katrien's research focuses on farming systems analysis, soil-plant-animal interactions, sustainable development and resource use efficiency, with a special interest in the functioning and dynamics of mixed crop-livestock systems. Current activities combine experimental trial work with simulation modelling to identify and assess options for sustainable intensification and climate-smart agriculture. Across various projects on smallholder farming systems in sub-Saharan Africa, Dr. Descheemaeker designs participatory and co-learning approaches that aim to co-design tailored agricultural technologies and practices to improve farm productivity, food security, resilience to shocks, and natural resource integrity. What I can bring to this network ?

Dr. Groot specialized in farming systems analysis, model-informed landscape planning and design, and participatory modelling and gaming. He holds a PhD in Agronomy and MScs in grassland science, animal physiology and tropical animal husbandry. He performed post-doc research in national and international projects concerning nutrient cycling, modeling of sustainability indicators and design of mixed farms in multifunctional landscapes dominated by dairy farming systems.Currently, Dr Groot has a coordinating role in integrated landscape and farming systems analysis addressing multi-scale issues of productivity, natural resource management, human nutrition and equitability for CGIAR Science Programs on Multifunctional Landscapes and Sustainable Farming Systems. Project sites are located in Asia (e.g. Nepal, Bangladesh), Africa (e.g., Ghana, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Malawi) and Latin America (e.g., Ecuador, Uruguay and Mexico).

Trained at the Institut Agro de Montpellier, where I specialized in markets, organization, and quality of agriculture in the South, I developed expertise in analyzing agricultural systems and their complexities. Passionate about multi-stakeholder projects, I seek to reconcile the interests of each to develop collective solutions. I have worked with associations, NGOs, and cooperatives on various projects: strengthening the skills of family producers, supporting certification (Participatory Guarantee Systems, FairTrade), analyzing the dynamics of collective action, and socioeconomic studies. These experiences have allowed me to work in different countries, including Brazil, Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, and Mauritius. What I can bring to this network ?
