Welcome to the CaPSha Case Studies based on Systems Science

The CapSha Systems Science Use Case is composed of a network of geographically defined Case Studies. A Case Study is a functional system where a sequence of goal-oriented steps are arranged to satisfy the needs of a group of users. In each case study a series of actions are taken with local agricultural research and development institutions and universities to strengthen the use of systems approaches to tackle the wicked challenges associated to agri-food systems in this specific context.
Through strengthening systems science within NARES a delimited Case Study setting, or group of settings, with specific environmental and socio- economic challenges would allow multiple disciplinary lenses to be operationalized and integrated to analyze these complex agri-food systems and develop potential socio-technical solutions together with stakeholders for further learning and action.
The selected Case Studies will bring together scientist from different disciplines and include a strong focus on stakeholder engagement to ensure contextualized relevance. PhD and MSc students will be engaged to explore specific research questions while integrating knowledge to solve real life problems.
As such the Case Study will combine a research program, in which contextualized interdisciplinary research will seek to accelerate sustainability transitions in agri-food systems while advancing system science tools and methods, with an educational program, in which MSc and PhD students will be trained, university and NARES staff will build systems thinking skills, and university courses and curricula on systems science will be developed. If relevant specific education programs on Systems Science application can also be developed for professional of the agrifood systems (public and private) in a Life Long learning approach.
In this way, the Case Study will target three core areas of capacity development, including (1) human capital development, (2) institutional development, (3) improvement of ecosystem operations in terms of policies and networks.

Each Case Study is implemented in a specific country, with local and national partners, and based on an existing R4D project in collaboration with the CGIAR as a bilateral project or part of a Science Program.

Each Case Study need to be described using the Case Study Form
