Ken’s research has focused on smallholder farming systems in sub-Saharan Africa, specialising in soil fertility, the role of nitrogen fixation by legumes, and the temporal and spatial dynamics of resources within crop/livestock farming systems. He is co-editor of “Pathways to African Food Security: Challenges, Threats and Opportunities Towards 2050” published in 2025 and sole author of “Nitrogen Fixation in Tropical Cropping Systems”. Ken Giller was recognised as the Tropical Agriculture Association International “Development Agriculturalist of the Year” in 2024. He is an Editor for the journal Global Food Security. Ken has been on the Web of Science list of Highly Cited Researchers (top 1%) since 2016. He has led a number of initiatives, such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation-funded “N2Africa - Putting Nitrogen Fixation to Work for Smallholder Farmers in Africa - http://www.n2africa.org/” which worked in 11 countries over ten years from 2009-2019. He has supervised over 100 PhDs successfully – more than half from African countries. Ken was Chair of Plant Production Systems from 2001 until he (officially) retired in 2023. He was earlier Professor of Tropical Soil Fertility at Wye College, University of London, and Professor of Soil Science at the University of Zimbabwe.
