Agroecological transitions of farming and food systems

Presentation

Santiago Dogliotti is Professor of Plant Production Systems at the Plant Sciences Department of the Faculty of Agronomy, Universidad de la República, Uruguay. He is also head of the Food Systems Sustainability Transitions Institute of the same University. He graduated as an agronomist from the Faculty of Agronomy in Uruguay. He obtained his MSc in Crop Science and his PhD in Production Ecology and Resource Conservation from Wageningen University. He has been a lecturer and researcher at the Faculty of Agronomy for 30 years. He lectures courses on Crop Ecophysiology, Vegetable production, and Analysis and design of agricultural production systems at BSc and MSc levels. He conducted several research projects on the diagnosis of sustainability and the redesign of family farm systems, combining simulation modeling at the field and farm levels with co-innovation processes in pilot farms.

What I can bring to this network ?

A link to the activities of the Food Systems Sustainability Transitions Institute (ITSSA - Udelar) of Uruguay

What I seek in this network ?

A community of systems scientists to interact to improve capacity building in systems approaches in Uruguay and elsewhere, and the development of shared projects

Science and creativity

Presentation

Dr. Groot specialized in farming systems analysis, model-informed landscape planning and design, and participatory modelling and gaming. He holds a PhD in Agronomy and MScs in grassland science, animal physiology and tropical animal husbandry. He performed post-doc research in national and international projects concerning nutrient cycling, modeling of sustainability indicators and design of mixed farms in multifunctional landscapes dominated by dairy farming systems.
Currently, Dr Groot has a coordinating role in integrated landscape and farming systems analysis addressing multi-scale issues of productivity, natural resource management, human nutrition and equitability for CGIAR Science Programs on Multifunctional Landscapes and Sustainable Farming Systems. Project sites are located in Asia (e.g. Nepal, Bangladesh), Africa (e.g., Ghana, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Malawi) and Latin America (e.g., Ecuador, Uruguay and Mexico).

What I can bring to this network ?

Experience in multi-method analysis and design of agroecosystems

What I seek in this network ?

Exchange of expertise and knowledge on systems analysis

Modelling

Presentation

Dr. Moussa Gueye is a lecturer in Abstract Algebra and Linear Algebra & Vector Analysis. His research experience is modelling of complex systems. He has experience in working in AQ modelling and measurements since 2008. His modelling experience started during my PhD project (2010-2014) where I used a global Numerical Climate Model to study the spatio-temporal variation of the air quality in West Africa. During my Post-Doc (2016-2019) at the Pennsylvania State University (PSU, PA, USA), I also worked on AQ modelling using the Weather Research and Forecast with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) which is a regional weather model adapted to West Africa.

What I can bring to this network ?

I will be happy to bring my modelling skills to this network and will join the efforts developed by each member of this network to make all these actions impactful and sustainable.

What I seek in this network ?

I seek in this network to develop the multidisciplinary aspects necessary to better study this challenging area of "system science"
